  • Is it possible to capture HDMI at 1080p/60fps over USB?

Can you do it for under $100?

    But first…

    What am I drinking?

This evening I’ve got the Kamikaze Eagle from ColdFire (Eugene, OR). A 6.9% IPA, it’s a little tropical and a little malty, but very crisp. And hopefully it can put out fires, because we have a few of those around right now.

Buy the capture card here: http://amzn.to/2FDpGx2
**NOTE – The card in the video is no longer available under the AGPtEK brand name. The same device is being sold by PYLE now.**

I was looking for a new HDMI capture card, and this was only $90 on Amazon. As best I can tell, it doesn’t have an official name. Amazon has it listed as the “AGPtEK HDMI Game Capture Card USB 3.0 HD Video 1080P 60FPS Live Streaming Game Recorder Device”. The box says “USB3.0 Game Capture Live Streaming”, and the unit itself has a model sticker on the back with “VG0061” printed on it.

    Even better… here’s the link: http://a.co/1rqDgdv

Confusing product name aside, this is a pretty cool little box. It promises 1080p HDMI capture at 60fps over USB 3.0. It also promises lower resolutions such as 480 and 720, at frame rates ranging from 24 to 60FPS. Opening the box reveals the capture card itself, a a USB 3.0 A Cable, and a sparse user manual.

After setting the card to 1080p and 60FPS, I fired up the game and hit record on both systems. While OBS Screencap was crisp, clean, and a smooth 60fps, the capture card seemed to have double vision. Every single frame in the video seemed to show either interpolation artifacts, or a mismatch in FPS. As if it were trying to upscale from 60i to 60p. And the image itself was very soft. Text was blurry, and if there was any motion to it, unreadable. The color was exceedingly warm, with almost a Sepia-cast over the image.

I set about flicking every setting I could find. Changing color space, buffering, YUV vs MJPG capture, lowering resolution and framerate. Nothing seemed to resolve the issue.

I decided to run through one more test, and flipped my computers. This time, DOOM ran on the x79, while my x99 system captured over HDMI.

The difference was night and day.

This time the image was free of artifacts and delivered a butter smooth and consistent 60FPS. The text is still a little soft, and not nearly as crisp as recording directly off screencap, but the footage is more than usable for game capture and streaming. If you’re looking at using this to plug a camera into and record RAW footage, I’d recommend you look elsewhere.

Retesting on the X99 rig saved this review from the depths, and saved me the headache of returning it. I mention it not as an absolute negative, but just something for you to keep in mind. 1080p/60 requires quite a bit of data. If you try to capture on a USB port that doesn’t offer full speed, your image quality may suffer with this card.

I recommend this card if you’re looking for the cheapest way to record or stream at 1080p/60fps. For any other option, you’re looking at nearly double the price, and honestly, this one does a pretty good job, so long as your computer can keep up its end of the deal.

As an international trading company, we have numerous partners, but about your company, I just want to say, you are really good, wide range, good quality, reasonable prices, warm and thoughtful service, advanced technology and equipment and workers have professional training, feedback and product update is timely, in short, this is a very pleasant cooperation, and we look forward to the next cooperation!
